We all live in a fast developing world. Being over-stimulated and very active, we rarely have the chance to slow our mind down and give some space and attention to ourselves.

In our modern lives we have learned to pay attention on the physical body; our senses are over-stimulated so over-loading the brain with information absorbed by those senses and the worries of our busy everyday lives. Sadly we almost never look in to our shelves and our emotional and spiritual states often are greatly neglected. Practicing Yoga encourages the mind to slow down and the focus to be directed inward enabling oneself to feel balanced. A happy , balanced body and mind will be able to nourish itself preventing body's dysfunctions that create physical and psychological disease.

Yoga is one of the greatest tools for refining one's mind, a way of giving attention to one's self and body at the present moment. It helps one to understand and "read" one's body and mind and, consequently, take action and responsibility for anything that might be wrong with either of the two.

Yogaloom is a provider of Yoga therapy for functional diseases including ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Synthrom), FM (Fibromyalgia) as well as special education needs including autism, down syndrome and cerebral palsy.

ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Synthrom) and FM (Fibromyalgia)

The NHS has been researching the suitability of exercise in the treatment of ME/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and CFS/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (also known as PVFS or CFIDS) for many years now in the UK, as well as in many other countries. Sufferers of ME/Chronic Fatigue were encouraged to work with graded exercise programmes, such us working out at the gym with increased strength and jogging to promote energy. Evidence showed that such exercises were not suitable for people with ongoing fatigue that is not relieved by normal rest or sleep. This sort of activities could easily push the sufferers into collapse. All forms of exercise were thus prohibited for the sufferers of CFS and FM.

Yoga is a system that can be very gently adapted to suit the individual's need or disability. By practicing postures/Asanas, one can gently hold positions and move in and out of these positions with the minimum of effort, making full use of their breath as well as positive thinking and meditation. One definition of Yoga is that it is Action in Inaction, as Yoga works without having to put too much effort or push yourself into an uncomfortable position or movement. Yoga works on a very subtle level not only on the physical body but also on the mind, on the emotions and on the spiritual aspect of a person's nature. Physically, it is good for the muscles and joints but also for the nerves, organs and glands, and it is a beautiful example of the fact that working on one's physical body can have a great effect on the emotional body and vice versa. It is amazing to look at how positive or negative thoughts can affect one another. Yoga can facilitate one to find the correct balance between the body and the mind.

Benefits include:

  • Regulating the function of the Pituitary Gland, which governs the Autonomic Nervous System and all other glands. If this dysfunctions, it can cause problems to our nervous system, our hormone balance etc.
  • Improves relaxation and sleeping patterns
  • As people with ME/CFS/Fibromyalgia they have a built of toxins in the body. Fiona Agombar explains: 'Your lymphatic system detoxifies your body by carrying waste products out of your system. However it only moves with circulation or with exercise. All the yoga postures work on stimulating the lymphatic system gently, which is why yoga is effective in detoxifying your system and helps to reduce lactic acid in the muscles.
  • Safely and gently increases tolerance to exercise
